Introduction to the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies

Pflaum produced this video specifically for parents to help them through the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies.

What is Faith Formation?

Faith formation is the lifelong process of shaping our relationship with God, self, others, and all creation.
Every experience in our lives can provide us with the opportunity to express our faith; the challenge we face is recognizing these opportunities and learning ways to live a sometimes counter-cultural life in a secular world. We know we can’t do this alone so we surround ourselves in community to be people of faith working out our journeys together.

Lifelong Faith Formation invokes and encourages an interactive approach among all the generations of our congregation concerning the spiritual, educational, social and service dimensions of faith.  Each age and stage blends into and learns from the other!  We are adaptive-we don't know what the next step always is, but we take steps in faith, and anticipate a revealing of what is to come - the work of the Spirit!

Students at all levels learn doctrine, traditions and biblical principles through teaching, study, discussions, drama, music, video and hands-on crafts (or object lessons).  Children also learn by observation and modeling; therefore, staffing each classroom with volunteers who are committed to the spiritual development of your child is important to our program.

We believe that children begin their spiritual journeys at a very early age, and we act in partnership with parents and our worship community to create an engaging, nurturing environment for Christian formation.

“The role of parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute.  The right and duty of parents to educate their children are primordial and inalienable.” CCC 2221

Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child’s earliest years.  This already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a Christian life in keeping with the Gospel.  Family catecheses precedes, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in that faith.

Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God.  The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catecheses of children and parents.” CCC 2226

Parents are the spiritual leaders of their families and the primary catechists to their children.  They are called to model a vibrant Catholic faith for their children.  The influence of parents on the faith lives of children cannot be denied.

Program Options:

Wednesday Evening Faith Formation-A school-year program offered for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.  Classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:15 to 7:30 pm at St. Paul, Newhall from mid-September through April.

Summer Faith Formation- A week long program offered for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.  The curriculum is condensed into five days.  Immaculate Conception, Van Horne is the location of the summer program held the second week in June.

No matter which program your family chooses, two years of classes are required for first reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation.

Family Faith Formation:

Each week, attend Mass as a family.  Become involved in the Mass by being a minister.  Discuss the readings and homily on your way home.

Parent Coaching Ministry

I've been encouraged to share with all of you about the Parent Coaching Ministry my wife and I have started called Built on Rock. We are on a mission to empower Catholic parents to discipline from connection (not control), get unstuck from cycles of discouragement, anger, and shame, and enjoy their parenting again!

We are releasing (free) weekly parenting videos on YouTubeInstagram, and Facebook to meet parents where they're at with encouragement and solid formation. Parents interested in going deeper can enroll in an online small group course or 1:1 coaching through our website:  www.builtonrockparentcoaching.org.

We also offer parenting workshops to parishes interested in providing a formation event for their parents. It can be in person or online, is typically 2 hours, and is titled "Discipline that Connects with your Child's Heart." (The parish workshop has also been paired with a matching teacher workshop at your local Catholic school and covered with Title II funding from the state.)
We would greatly appreciate it if you would feel comfortable enough to share our videos with your parents. We believe that what we are offering can greatly support parents in relating with their children in an enjoyable and grace-filled way. We would also be grateful to talk to any of you interested in partnering together to offer a workshop for parents. You can contact us with any questions or interest in collaboration through our ministry email: builtonrockparentcoaching@gmail.com

Thank you for reading this email, and for the important work you do for our Church! God bless you all!
